Dart Regatta Report

Friday 15th April 2016

Lyme Regis Gig Club were invited to take part in Dart Pilot Gig Club's great annual Regatta, which takes place in the picturesque entrance to the River Dart. This was a racing competition on 9th April 2016 pitched our crews against some of the most established teams in the South West, including Caradon Pilot Gig Club who are former World Champion runners-up.

That said, of the selected 10 crews attending he event, this was a competition that saw the Lyme Club bring home one of their best results tally yet.

The afternoon proceedings were underway with the Ladies B and Ladies A races which were, perhaps the more challenging of the afternoon as they woul be battling with the fairly strong tide, which meant turning on the sharper markers would test them and their cox. More so than usual, even so they both managed to notch up a respectable 7th place.

After a troublesome start for the Mens B through a pin braking, Lyme were last away from the start line but made up three positions in the first leg and after the final turn they were catching 4th place Dartmouth, finishing less than a boat length behind them.

Next up were a very strong field of Men's A catagory rowers. After a good start, Caradon would once again set the pace but chasing them with all their might would be the Lyme crew, who maintained their position and racing line down to the irst mark. Expertly coxed by Jeff Legge, they took the remaining turns and crossed the finish line in an impressive 2nd position.

Now it was the turn of the Vets crews and again Caradon were out of the blocks and away down the river, setting the pace for the following teams. Lyme's Ladies did well to stay with the main pack, finishing 9th in their race, with the Men's Vets finishing 4th in theirs.

The Ladies and Men's C Crews were next to row out to the start. Off the line, the Ladies held their position well in the mid-field to finish 5th place. The Men's C race saw Lyme end the winning run for Caradon by crossing the line in a fantastic first place. A great effort, well executed by coxn Kerry Maguire and her crew.

The last race of he afternoon was he Mens/Ladies mixed which saw Lyme finish in 3rd place. Lyme Regis finishe the event 4th overall.

Once again Lyme Regis Gig Club would like to thank the organisers of Dartmouth Pilot Gig Club for hosting such a great, well run event.
