Tempest delivers at 3 Rivers for Lyme
Wednesday 8th March 2017
Lyme Regis Gig Club started the 2017 gig rowing season in fine form at the traditional season opener, the gruelling 3 River Race hosted by Caradon Gig Club at Saltash in Cornwall.
The 3 Rivers Race features 80 crews giving a good test and a measure of how all those long hours of winter training have gone. The race is around seven miles long, taking around one hour to complete.
Lyme Regis Gig Club entered two crews in the ladies race. The Lyme ladies A Crew, rowing Tempest overtook a number of crews in the latter part of the race, including local rivals Bridport A, to finish in a club best of 24th. A healthy rivalry beckons this season between these two friendly local crews. The Ladies B Crew rowing Black Ven, knocked well over three minutes off last year's time,
Lyme Regis Gig Club also entered three crews in the Men's events. The Lyme A Crew, again rowing Tempest had a rapid start then settled into 11th position. The Lyme B Crew had a solid row, with a trio of 3 Rivers debutants and one competing in his first ever race, and they hauled in some notable scalps, including Cotehele Quay A, in what was a strong finish in 32nd position.
Finally the Men's Lyme C Crew in Rebel had an outstanding performance from the outset, breaking free of the pack with only two B Teams to keep them company for the remainder of the course. A controlled row that would see the Lyme crew hold their own against the B crews of Torridge and Salcombe to finish 57th.
The compined results put Tempest in 12th place overall, a club best for Lyme Regis.
The Club focus is now training for the World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly at the end of April 2017 when Lyme will entre six crews.
