Lyme Regis Gig Club Celebrate Success at Ladies County Championships
Monday 30th September 2019
Lyme Regis Gig Club celebrated success at the Ladies Newquay County Championships held on 7th and 8th September. Lyme Regis A crew reached the semi-finals and achieved a 12th place finish out of a field of 120 crews, achieving their best ever result. Lyme Regis were the top placed Dorset club and one of only two clubs outside of Cornwall to reach the semi-finals.
The Championships, held over 2 days, are seen as the culmination of a summer’s rowing and the second most important calendar event of the year after the World Championships. The first day saw Lyme Regis drawn against their local rivals Bridport, with both clubs comfortably making it through to the second round in rough seas.
The second day saw calmer waters and Lyme Regis easing into the quarter finals winning their second round race by several boat lengths. With the field reduced to 30 crews and the increased level of competition, next up was the quarter finals and Lyme Regis found themselves again drawn against Bridport. With only first place and the fastest 7 crews around the 1.6 mile course progressing to the semi-finals, Lyme Regis stormed off the start line and into second place before the first turn. Lyme Regis held their position and set their sights on Flushing Mylor in first place. Lyme Regis crossed the finish line in second place, and with a quick time, qualified for the semi-finals.
The semi-finals saw Lyme Regis lining up against the top Cornish clubs including Falmouth, the current World Champions, Caradon, and Newquay. Lyme Regis held their own to the first turn and with supporters cheering them on from the spectator boats following the racing, started to chase down Newquay. With some close racing, Lyme were narrowly beaten by Newquay but secured their best ever result at the championships. The results rounded off a successful season for Lyme Regis women’s squad who finished 26th at the World Championships earlier in the year, another club best and highest place finish.
